TAMPA — A coalition of public and private groups that's working to reduce traffic deaths in Hillsborough County has targeted 20 of the worst stretches of roadway to begin its work.
The Vision Zero Action Plan released Tuesday is based on severe crash data from 2012 to 2016. The plan ranks each stretch by severe crashes per mile of roadway.
These roads will be a focus for road-safety improvements through 2019:
1. Brandon Boulevard, from Falkenburg Road to Dover Road
Posted speed: 45-50 miles per hour.
Crashes per mile of roadway: 25 (180 total)
From the report: "This is a heavily-trafficked suburban corridor with many shopping plazas and driveways that create greater opportunity for crashes involving turning movements of drivers going to or leaving the destinations along the corridor."
2. Gibsonton Drive, Boyette Road, Interstate 75 to Balm Riverview Road

Crashes per mile of roadway: 21 (49 total)

3. Hillsborough Avenue, Longboat Boulevard to Florida Avenue
Posted speed: 45-55 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 19.8 (176 total)
4. Fletcher Avenue, Armenia Avenue to 50th Street
Posted speed: 35-50 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 19.6 (100 total)

5. Dale Mabry Highway, Hillsborough Avenue to Bearss Avenue
Posted speed: 45 mph

6. Lynn Turner Road, Gunn Highway to Ehrlich Road

7. Meridian Avenue, Channelside Drive to Twiggs Street
Posted speed: 35 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 18.3 (11 total)
8. Bruce B. Downs, Fowler Avenue to Bearss Avenue
Posted speed: 45 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 18.1 (32 total)
9. 50th Street and 56th Street, Martin Luther King Boulevard to Hillsborough Avenue
Posted speed: 45-50 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 17.7 (22 total)
10. 15th Street, Fowler Avenue to Fletcher Avenue
Posted speed: 30 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 17.6 (18 total)
11. Big Bend Road, U.S. 41 to I-75
Posted speed: 55 mph
Crashes per mile of roadway: 16.6 (51 total)
