Boat fire in Hernando Beach burns legs of two teenagers

There were five family members aboard when the boat caught fire. The two teens were flown to Tampa General Hospital.

HERNANDO BEACH — A 15- and 16-year-old were flown to Tampa General Hospital with serious burn injuries after the family boat caught fire Saturday morning, according to Hernando County Fire Rescue.

The fire was reported to 911 at about 8:47 a.m. at the county boat ramp at 4477 Caliente St.

Firefighters arrived about six minutes later and found the rear of the pontoon boat in flames in the water near the dock. They extinguished the outboard motor, officials said.

There were five family members aboard and four of them were injured. The two teenagers were flown to the hospital, said Division Fire Chief Kenneth Wannen, but their mother and grandparents declined medical treatment. Tampa General is home to the region’s burn center.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Wannen said it appears to have been a problem with the engine or the fuel line. The fire didn’t spread to any other boats or structures.
