A bicyclist looking for a private spot in the woods to use the bathroom instead stumbled upon human bones, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

On Oct. 26 at about 2 p.m., a man was riding along the Good Neighbor Trail in Brooksville when he stopped and walked about 30 yards into a wooded area. By the time deputies arrived on the scene, it was too dark and they couldn’t find the remains, a news release said.

The next morning the bicyclist lead deputies to where he saw the bones, but they were initially unsuccessful in finding the remains. The bicyclist and deputies continued to look and eventually found them.

The local Medical Examiner’s office, forensic technicians and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Cadaver Team also helped the search.

An unspecified number of human bones were collected and sent to a facility in Central Florida for testing, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The identity and possible cause of death are still under investigation.
