SPRING HILL — A 24-year-old motorcyclist was fatally injured Friday after crashing into a turning SUV at a “high rate of speed,” according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash took place about 11:47 a.m. at Mariner Boulevard and Augustine Road.

The motorcyclist was heading north on Mariner Boulevard at a “high rate of speed,” troopers said. At the same time, a 66-year-old Spring Hill woman was driving an SUV west on Augustine Road, then attempted to turn left onto Mariner Boulevard.

The woman ended up turning into the path of the motorcycle, according to the Highway Patrol, causing the collision.

The 24-year-old Spring Hill man was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries. He was wearing his helmet at the time.

The Highway Patrol did not release the names of those involved because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was designed to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information that had long been available under Florida’s public records law.
