SPRING HILL — A 35-year-old Weeki Wachee mother and her 6-month-old son were killed in a four-vehicle crash Monday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened on U.S. 19 at the intersection with Breakwater Boulevard around 10:09 a.m., the Highway Patrol said in an updated news release at 6:33 p.m. Monday.

A 30-year-old Brooksville man was driving a pickup truck southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 when the Weeki Wachee woman, who was driving an SUV on Breakwater Boulevard, turned into the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 at the intersection — and into the path of the truck driver, who struck her vehicle, troopers said.

The impact sent the truck into an SUV driven by a 73-year-old man from Melbourne as his vehicle waited in a left turn lane, the Highway Patrol said. The collision sent that SUV into the pickup truck of a 42-year-old Hudson man who had been in the left turn lane behind the SUV.

The Weeki Wachee woman died at the scene of the crash, troopers said. Her 6-month-old son was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

None of the other drivers or their passengers sustained serious injuries, the Highway Patrol said.

Troopers did not identify any of the people involved in the crash.

Just before the fatal crash, one of the vehicles involved — a maroon, 2014 Chevrolet four-door pickup — was in a collision at U.S. 19 and State Road 50. Troopers asked that any witnesses to this crash contact them at 813-558-1800.
