A Dade City man died following a Hernando County crash in which police say he lost control of his van after suffering a medical emergency while driving.
The man, 70, was heading south on Burwell Road near Datura Drive in Ridge Manor just after 4 p.m. Saturday, according to the Highway Patrol. Police said that when the medical emergency hit him, he veered across the northbound lanes and into the shoulder, and hit a fence and tree. The car then caught fire, police said.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, police said, where he died. He was wearing a seatbelt, according to a crash report. No other vehicles were involved.
