TAMPA — The first time Brendan and Tara Wehmann went to Stumpy’s Hatchet House in New Jersey, they had such a great time that they decided to look into opening their own franchise. Two years later, the husband and wife duo opened the second Stumpy’s in Florida and the 15th franchise overall.
Founded in 2015, Stumpy’s is an indoor recreational facility that offers hatchet throwing in a safe and fun environment for guests 21 years and older. There are seven throwing pits with two throwing lanes per pit. Guests can reserve throwing pits by the hour and no prior experience is required.
“It’s all about technique and form,” said Brendan Wehmann, co-owner.
He pointed out that all throws must be done overhand, but guests can decide between using a one- or two-handed grip.
Stumpy’s features a bar that serves beer, wine and snacks. Food can be brought in, catered, delivered or purchased from food trucks. There are TV’s, couches, chairs, picnic tables and games. Instead of fluorescent lights, the Wehmanns chose overhead string lighting to give the space an outdoor, rustic feel.
Private parties, corporate events, team building, birthday parties and other celebrations can be booked at Stumpy’s. In the short time it has been open, there has even been a planned marriage proposal that the Wehmanns helped coordinate.
Stumpy’s Hatchet House is located in the United Business Park at 13353 W Hillsborough Ave, Units 103-104. It is open 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. Friday, 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday.
