BRANDON — Deputies have arrested a man they say killed a woman outside an apartment complex Wednesday night after she had recently broken up with him.

Richard Miller, 49, shot the woman at the Westchester Apartments on Nina Elizabeth Circle about 8:30 p.m., according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The woman was in her 50s, investigators said, but they did not identify her. She died later that night at Brandon Regional Hospital.

Detectives on Thursday tracked Miller to a home in Tampa. A SWAT team surrounded the property on E Marks Drive, investigators said, and Miller came outside without incident. Inside the home, authorities found the .45-caliber gun they say was used in the shooting. Miller faces a charge of first degree murder.

He had been the subject of more than 30 arrests before Thursday, deputies said, including on charges of domestic violence, robbery and assault.

“To anyone in our community who is involved in a violent relationship, please do not continue suffering in silence,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement Thursday. He urged victims of abuse to call 211 for the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay or 813-247-SAFE (7233) for The Spring of Tampa Bay.

The Sheriff’s Office typically withholds the names of crime victims, citing its interpretation of a constitutional amendment known as Marsy’s Law.
