GIBSONTON — A 50-year-old Riverview man died Sunday night on Interstate 75 when he lost control of his car and collided with a concrete traffic barrier, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

John Hampton was driving a 2003 Cadillac Escalade south on I-75 in the exit lane for Gibsonton Drive at about 8:50 p.m., trooper said.

As traffic slowed in front of him, troopers said Hampton attempted an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision. He lost control of his vehicle, drove onto the inside shoulder and struck a concrete traffic barrier.

The Cadillac overturned and he was ejected. Hampton, who was not wearing his seatbelt, died at the scene of the crash.
