TAMPA — Police were investigating a hit-and-run crash on West Hillsborough Avenue that killed a pedestrian early Tuesday.

Officers were called to the scene shortly after 5 a.m. at the intersection with North Dale Mabry Highway, police said. Officers found an adult male dead, but determined the driver who hit him had fled.

Based on evidence left at the scene, investigators believe the man was hit by a 1999-2007 Ford E-series van, which will have damage to the front driver’s side, including a destroyed headlight assembly.

Police said they believe the van’s driver took off eastbound on Hillsborough Avenue after the crash.
