GIBSONTON — A 30-year-old Bradenton woman was killed Sunday afternoon when a car she was riding in drove off U.S. 41 at Gibsonton Road and crashed into a light pole, mailbox and a parked pickup truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 2:45 p.m. where U.S. 41 intersects with the road known as Gibsonton Drive east of the intersection and Alice Avenue to the west.

The car was headed south on U.S. 41. It was not clear why the driver, a 25-year-old Tampa man, left the roadway, the Highway Patrol said. The agency did not say in a news release whether he was injured.

The Highway Patrol did not release the name of the driver or passenger under its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2018. The law is meant to protect crime victims, but it deprives the public of information that had long been made available in Florida under the state’s public records law.
