TAMPA — Kelly Ayers, a Tampa lawyer and candidate in the August election for Hillsborough County circuit judge, has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a statement from her campaign.

Ayers began to feel unwell last week, said the statement, released late Monday. On Saturday, she underwent a test for COVID-9 and it came back positive shortly thereafter. She has since followed recommended protocols for those who contract the illness.

“My family thankfully has tested negative,” Ayers said in the statement. “I am lucky to be stable. And, while my symptoms are not mild, I have yet to experience severe symptoms.”

She went on to encourage the public to practice social distancing and follow the health recommendations of local leaders.

Ayers, 52, faces Tampa attorney John Schifino in the August election for Hillsborough Circuit Judge, group 9.
