GIBSONTON — One man is dead after a shooting near a gas station on Gibsonton Drive on Monday, deputies said.
Shortly after 10 p.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a number of calls about a shooting near the Murphy USA gas station at 9023 Gibsonton Drive, deputies said. Deputies responded and found a man who had been shot. The man was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and pronounced dead there, deputies said.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release the man’s name. The office no longer releases the names of suspected crime victims due to its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, an amendment to Florida’s constitution that’s meant to protect crime victims but deprives the public of information that had previously been available under the state’s public records laws.
The shooting does not appear to be random and investigators believe the shooter and man who was killed knew each other, deputies said. They released an image from a video recording, apparently from inside the gas station, of an individual described as a person of interest in the case.
He is believed to be a dark-skinned male, 20 to 30 years old, with a muscular build and last seen wearing a white shirt, light-colored pants and an orange hat.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 813-247-8200.
