TAMPA — A 54-year-old man was fatally struck by an SUV as he tried to cross West Hillsborough Avenue early Monday, police said.

The man was trying to cross just east of Highland Avenue at about 5:10 a.m. when he was hit by an eastbound Mazda CX-5, according to Tampa police. The pedestrian died from his injuries.

The driver remained at the scene after the crash and told police he did not see the man trying to cross. Police said no charges are expected but the investigation continued Monday.

Police have not released the pedestrian’s name because investigators were still working to notify his family.
