THONOTOSASSA — A man crossing U.S. 301 was struck and killed Friday afternoon near Tom Folson Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The 45-year-old man was walking east across the highway when an SUV, driven northbound by a 65-year-old Zephyrhills man, attempted to pass a slower vehicle in a merge lane before the road dissolved from four lanes to two. The vehicle struck the man at 4:11 p.m. and killed him, troopers said.
The Highway Patrol did not release the identities of those involved because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2018. The law is meant to protect crime victims, but it deprives the public of information that had long been made available in Florida under the state’s public records law.
Alcohol was not identified as a factor in the crash. Troopers say the Zephyrhills man was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
