A 54-year-old Wimauma man was killed Thursday night after he was ejected from a pickup and then hit by a vehicle whose driver left the scene, Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported.

The incident occurred about 8:09 p.m. Thursday on State Road 674 just east of Balm Wimauma Road. Troopers said the man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, ran off the road and was ejected from the pickup, which then ran into a barbed wire fence and came to rest in a cow pasture.

A short time later, a vehicle traveling east on State Road 674 hit the man in the roadway. The driver then left the scene. The injured man was later taken to a hospital, where he died.

Troopers are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call the highway patrol at 813-558-1800 or Crime Stoppers at 800-873-TIPS.

The highway patrol didn’t release the name of the man who was killed because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
