TAMPA — Troopers were searching Thursday for the driver of a sport-utility vehicle who struck and killed a bicyclist on Dale Mabry Highway.
The SUV was headed south on Dale Mabry just south of Hamilton Avenue about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday when the bicyclist tried to cross the southbound lanes from the west and entered the SUV’s path, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. After the SUV struck the bicyclist, the driver pulled into a nearby parking lot, parked and ran away, troopers said.
The bicyclist, a 23-year-old Tampa man, died at the scene. The Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of people involved in crashes because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
Troopers said the SUV driver was a man with short dark hair and medium build and was wearing a red shirt at the time of the crash.
The Highway Patrol asked anyone with information on the crash to call 813-558-1800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
