RUSKIN — A 19-year-old Ruskin man was killed Friday when his motorcycle crashed into an SUV on U.S. 41, troopers say.
The crash took place about 7:15 a.m. on U.S. 41 and Second Avenue SE. The motorcyclist was heading north on U.S. 41 at a high rate of speed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The SUV driver was stopped at Second Avenue SE, then drove east in an attempt to cross the highway, troopers say.
The motorcycle crashed into the SUV, according to the Highway Patrol. The motorcyclist was thrown onto the roadway and died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.
The SUV driver, a 32-year-old Ruskin woman, was not injured. Troopers did not release any other information about the crash.
The Highway Patrol did not release the name of those involved in the crash because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law. The Highway Patrol withholds names even when no crime is suspected.
