TAMPA — Detectives are investigating after a man was found fatally shot behind the wheel of a car on Interstate 275 late Tuesday, police say.
Officers responded about 11:20 p.m. to a report of a car crashing into the guardrail in the interstate’s southbound lanes north of Busch Boulevard, according to Tampa police. They found a 2015 Dodge with multiple bullet holes resting against the concrete center median wall.
A 22-year-old man in the driver’s seat had at least one gunshot wound in his upper body. A Tampa Fire Recue crew took him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police did not release the man’s name. The Tampa Police Department does not release the names of suspected crime victims due to its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
Police closed the southbound lanes of I-275 between Busch and Fowler Avenue until about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday while investigators worked at the scene.
Detectives were working to determine where the man was shot and what led to the shooting. Police asked anyone with information on the case to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477 or go to crimestopperstb.com.
