TAMPA — A 51-year-old Land O’ Lakes man died Wednesday after he climbed over and fell from a barrier wall on the Veterans Expressway near Waters Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the man crashed his 2019 Ford Fusion into an impact attenuator, also known as a crash cushion, at the expressway’s northbound exit ramp onto Waters Avenue.
After the crash, which happened just before 2 p.m., troopers said the man continued to drive his damaged vehicle for another 100 yards. He then exited his sedan and walked approximately 50 yards southbound.
That’s where the man began climbing over a barrier wall, where he eventually fell onto the grass shoulder. He died at the scene from injuries sustained in the fall, according to the Highway Patrol.
