TAMPA — A fatal crash on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in East Tampa closed traffic lanes Tuesday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened just before 5 a.m. near Riga Road in the eastbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Highway Patrol said.

A 55-year-old Riverview man attempted to turn left across Martin Luther King Boulevard when his car entered the path of a pickup truck headed east. Pictures from the scene show the vehicles collided nearly head-on.

The Riverview man was transported to a hospital and died from his injuries. The pickup driver, a 54-year-old Tampa woman, was seriously injured. Both were wearing their seatbelts.

Troopers closed all but one eastbound lane after the crash.
