PLANT CITY — A 38-year-old Mulberry man died early Thursday morning after his car struck a guardrail on Interstate 4, the Florida Highway Patrol says.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes of Interstate 4 near the exit with State Road 566, troopers said.

Troopers did not release the name of the man who died.

The man was speeding before the crash, troopers said, and he lost control of his car. That’s when he struck a guardrail about 12:30 a.m. and was ejected onto the highway.

The Highway Patrol said the driver died at the scene. A passenger in the car, a 34-year-old Lakeland man, was seriously injured. Neither man was wearing their seatbelt at the time of impact, troopers said.
