A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy has been arrested on a drunken driving charge and placed on unpaid leave after a crash in Polk County in December.

Deputy Shastri Khan, who was hired by the agency in November 2018, crashed his personal vehicle into two other cars on Dec. 29. Khan was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital after the crash. He didn’t take a breath test at the scene, but lab tests taken at the hospital showed he had been impaired while driving, the sheriff’s said in a news release issued on Wednesday.

Two other people in the crash received minor injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

As law enforcement officers, we are held to a higher standard, both on and off duty,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister in a statement. “It is deeply disappointing when a member of our team falls short of that standard, as is the case with this DUI. We will hold the individual accountable for their actions and work to rebuild the trust of our community.”

Khan was placed on unpaid leave right after the crash and will remain on leave until an investigation is complete.
