Q&A: Lifetime Network not saying whether 'Army Wives' will continue

Published Sept. 10, 2012

'Army Wives' may be finished

Army Wives is coming up to a finale, but the network isn't saying if it will be back for another season. Will it?

It was widely speculated earlier this year that this might be the final season for Army Wives, but the Lifetime Network has not yet made any statements confirming or denying, though its ads have been making references to "until it all ends." The sixth season finale was last night.

Army Wives, which is based on the book Army Wives: The Unwritten Code of Military Marriage by Tanya Biank, is the most successful series in the history of the Lifetime Network, and the ratings have remained relatively strong, ranging from 2.6 million to 4.7 million viewers each week.

If you're looking for clues about renewal, here's one: Before the season started, the contracts for the original Army Wives actors ended after six seasons. But here's another: This summer, Catherine Bell, 44, who plays Denise Sherwood, reportedly signed a two-year deal with the studio that produces the show. It's considered a "holding" contract, one that ties up the performer even though the show has yet to be renewed.

Kim Delaney out of picture?

What has happened to Kim Delaney on Army Wives? She has not been on in weeks and with the show coming to an end, I was wondering if she will be back.

The Lifetime Network, which airs the show, has made no public comments about the absence or future of Kim Delaney, 50, who has played Claudia Joy Holden on Army Wives for six seasons.

The last time Delaney made the news was Sept. 23, 2011, when she spoke in Philadelphia at the Liberty Medal Ceremony to honor former Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Described as "disheveled" and slurring her words, Delaney delivered a rambling speech in which she seemed to be confusing events from the show with real life. She was interrupted before finishing and escorted from the podium.

Delaney has been in rehab twice for treatment of alcohol abuse.

'Diva' cliffhanger may be clue

Is Drop Dead Diva coming back for another season?

No announcement has been made yet by Lifetime for the show, which ended its fourth season last night. But it was a cliffhanger, which is a often a good indication the show will be back. Another is this: The show has largely kept its viewership year-to-year, and Lifetime says it's the "No. 1 drama across ad-supported cable in its time slot."

'Merlin' planned for this fall

I would like to know if the program entitled Merlin will be airing on BBC any time soon.

Merlin, the British fantasy-drama about the young wizard and his relationship with Prince Arthur, has been renewed for a fifth season. No date has been set for the next 13 episodes on BBC, but the network says it will be this fall.
