PORT RICHEY — A lift gate on a passing Florida Cancer Specialists vehicle came loose Monday evening and struck four bicyclists, seriously injuring all of them, according to Pasco Fire Rescue.
The incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. on eastbound Ridge Road, near Leo Kidd Avenue. The vehicle was driving by the bicyclists when the lift gate suddenly came loose, but authorities released no other details about how the incident took place.
"We are concerned and deeply saddened by this accident," the cancer organization said in an email to the Tampa Bay Times. "Those who were affected, their families and friends are in our thoughts and prayers, as we await the full investigation by authorities."
All four bicyclists were taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point for medical treatment. The three who suffered the most severe injuries were classified as "trauma alerts," authorities said.
Port Richey police officers found the driver, authorities said. The identities of the injured bicyclists were not released.
Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point did not respond to requests for information Tuesday about the condition of the bicyclists. Port Richey police did not release any more details about the incident or investigation.
