Pinellas County commissioners also approved an interlocal agreement with St. Petersburg for the Cross-Bay Ferry. Commissioner Dave Eggers voted no. He said the service should be supported by private businesses, not tax dollars.

The cost for the service will be split between four government entities the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa, and Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Tampa has yet to approve an agreement to participate.

Each entity will pay $150,000 for a second season of service that will run from Nov. 1 to April.

The entities also would share in any excess revenue in accordance with the agreement between HMS Ferries, which won the bid to provide service, and the city of St. Petersburg. HMS provided service for the pilot that ran from November 2016-April 2017.

Commissioner Janet Long expressed concern about a lack of parking near where the ferry would dock in downtown St. Petersburg. The ferry would run from downtown St. Petersburg to downtown Tampa. Construction is currently underway on The Pier, which is eliminating some parking spots.
