MacDill Air Force base again opens shores to fishing

Published Apr. 26, 2013

TAMPA — MacDill Air Force Base will again open its usually restricted south shores to fishing by registered boaters.

The event will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 11, the base announced Thursday.

To register, call the base's outdoor recreation office at (813) 828-4982.

Registered anglers will be required to display a flag provided by the base.

The authorized area for fishing is at latitude/longitude coordinates 83.58074 and 11.49519 to 83.40134 and 11.45852 — about 2 miles of coastline.

"Opening the waters of MacDill to our local anglers is just another way that we are trying to showcase our base to this great community," said a statement from Col. Scott DeThomas, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. "In the current fiscal environment, it is important to find low to no cost opportunities to bring advocates on base."

The base last opened it shoreline to fishing in April 2012.
