Joe Biden might have scored himself a few big wins in this week’s primaries, but his wife, Jill Biden, and campaign adviser Symone Sanders have emerged as Super Tuesday’s super heroines.
The two women found themselves trending Wednesday morning after images and video from Joe Biden’s California speech went viral. During the speech, the stage was stormed by anti-dairy protesters.
In video taken during the speech, Jill Biden immediately turns to shield her husband from a protester rushing the stage. The Bidens and Joe’s sister watch that woman being carried offstage as another rushes up.
Then Jill Biden flips into defense mode once more. Wearing a cream-colored, knee-length dress and a green blazer, the 68-year-old self-described “good Philly girl” grabs the second woman by the wrists and pushes back as the protester charges toward Joe Biden.
Within a fraction of a second, Sanders, a senior adviser in the Biden campaign, explodes onto the stage, grabbing the protester and quickly pulling her off the stage with one arm. Once off the stage, the woman tried to get up and rush again. Sanders wasn’t having it. Wrapping both arms around the protester, Sanders can be seen dragging the woman away.
Twitter had a field day.
“Ya’ll see Symone Sanders come off the line like a pro bowl linebacker,” user Billy Michael Honor tweeted. “Geesh.”
“Damn, Dr. Jill Biden and Joe’s younger sister surrounded him like Secret Service agents to protect him, then Symone Sanders came in for the tackle,” Twitter user Ricky Davila added. “That’s love from powerful women.”
Once the melee was over, Jill Biden turned to the crowd, saying, “We’re alright. We’re alright.”
It’s not the first time Jill Biden has made headlines for rushing to her husband’s aid. During a campaign event ahead of the New Hampshire primary last month, campaign workers had trouble stopping a heckler as he pushed toward Joe Biden, who was giving a speech. Until, that is, Jill Biden jumped out of her chair to help push the man back until he was escorted out.
