Three Florida children are without parents after both their mother and father were killed in a car crash.
The crash occurred April 20 in North Fort Myers. The mother, father and the three children were all inside their Jeep Wrangler when it crashed on U.S. 41. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the vehicle hit a curb and overturned multiple times. The cause is still under investigation.
The father, Jesus Machado, 36, was driving. He was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene. The mother, Keli Machado, 30, was taken to a hospital. She died Friday night.
Their 5-year-old daughter, Khaleesi, remains in critical condition. Two other sons -- 11-year-old Anthony and 8-year-old Vincent -- escaped the crash with minor injuries, the News Press reports.
Rita Noda, Jesus Machado's sister, started a GoFundMe page for the family. She said family members have not yet told the children that their mother died, but plan to do so with the help of a professional.
Noda said her brother's family was tight-knit. They had been looking forward to spending more time together after he had returned from a recent work trip.
The family was active in the church and community, she said. She said she hopes people will pray for the children.
"Everything they did, they did for their kids," she said.
Noda said after asking the boys what they remember, the family believes the crash, which is under investigation, might be a hit and run. FHP officials could not be reached Saturday to determine if troopers believe that to be the case. Troopers are asking any witnesses to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
