2 dead, child in critical condition after Pasco house catches fire

SAN ANTONIO, Fla. — A man, 62, and a boy, 5, died after a house fire broke out Friday night, authorities reported. Another victim, a 3-year-old girl, remains in critical condition.

The man was the children’s grandfather, according to fire officials.

Nine dogs — a male adult and eight puppies — also died from the blaze. Two other dogs that were on the property are being treated.

According to Pasco County Fire Rescue, firefighters responded about 10:10 p.m. to a one-story house on the 29700 block of Darby Road. “Substantial smoke” was showing, according to a news release.

Within 90 seconds, responders pulled the man out of the home and tried to save his life, the release said. After they did, neighbors told firefighters that there were still children inside.

Responders took the boy and the girl by helicopter and drove the man to a nearby hospital for treatment, the release said.

The fire was put out by early Saturday morning, and firefighters are still investigating its cause. The agency did not further identify the three victims.
