WESLEY CHAPEL — A man died when his sport utility vehicle hit a tree and overturned as he was trying to pass a car slowing to turn into a driveway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The crash occurred about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in front of a home on Quail Hollow Boulevard south of Sora Boulevard in Wesley Chapel.
The SUV driver, 48, from Wesley Chapel, was headed north on Quail Hollow in a no-passing zone when he tried passing a car that was turning left, the Highway Patrol said. The car was driven by a 58-year-old Wesley Chapel man.
The front of the SUV struck the left side of the turning car, sending the SUV off the road and into a tree. The driver of the car was able to bring it to a stop.
The SUV driver later died of his injuries at a hospital. The driver of the car received minor injuries. Both men were wearing seatbelts.
The Highway Patrol did not release the names of the drivers because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
