A 38-year-old Port Richey woman died after she was hit by a sport-utility vehicle as she crossed U.S. 19 Tuesday night, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

The crash occurred about 9:40 p.m. on U.S. 19 near Alt. U.S. 19. A 51-year-old man from Lutz was driving south on U.S. 19 when the woman crossed the road and stepped in front of the vehicle, troopers said.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died. The driver of the SUV was not injured, troopers said.

The highway patrol didn’t released the names of the people involved because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
