HUDSON — A 40-year-old New Port Richey man was killed Wednesday when he was struck by a pickup truck while trying to cross U.S. 19 on a bicycle, troopers said.

The bicyclist was trying to cross the highway from the west near Viva Via Drive about 6 p.m. when he rode into the path of a southbound pickup, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital and died from his injuries there.

The pickup driver, a 56-year-old New Port Richey man, was not injured.

The Highway Patrol does not release the names of people involved in crashes because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law. The Highway Patrol withholds names even in cases when no crime is suspected.
