NEW PORT RICHEY — A 79-year-old New Port Richey man riding a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a turning car as he was crossing the street at an intersection, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 4:40 p.m. Thursday at Rowan Road and Massachusetts Avenue, the intersection of two divided four-lane roadways with traffic lights, separate turn lanes and crosswalks.

The man in the wheelchair was traveling north on the shoulder of Rowan Road and began crossing at the intersection as the driver of a sport utility vehicle was turning right, the Highway Patrol said. The front of the SUV struck the wheelchair and the rider was ejected.

The man was not in a crosswalk and did not wait for a crossing signal, the Highway Patrol said. He was taken to a hospital and later died there.

The SUV driver, a 64-year-old New Port Richey man, was not injured.

The Highway Patrol did not release their names.
