A Pasco County apartment fire Monday killed a child and an adult, Fire-Rescue officials reported.

Pasco Fire-Rescue was called to Park at Ashley Place apartments in New Port Richey at about 12:20 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the agency.

When firefighters arrived at the apartments, which are located at 4031 Vista Verde Drive, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor. Firefighters were told two people were possibly trapped inside, and they pulled an adult and child out of an apartment, the news release stated.

The adult and child were taken to local hospitals. Both were later pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

One firefighter received minor burns during the operation.

Fire crews brought the fire under control within about a half-hour, the news release states.

No other information, including the names of the people killed, was released.
