PINELLAS PARK — A 35-year-old man sent numerous explicit and inappropriate text messages to a 13-year-old girl, police say.
Kyle Hughe Kemp was arrested Wednesday on a felony count of transmission of harmful material to a minor.
The investigation started soon after the messages were discovered at about 1:30 p.m. that day in a Pinellas Park Middle School classroom. The 13-year-old girl ignored a teacher’s request to put her cell phone away. The teacher took the phone from her, police said, and discovered the sexually explicit texts.
School administrators then contacted Pinellas Park police. Detectives said they interviewed Kemp. He knew he was sending inappropriate messages to a 13-year-old, police said.
Kemp has no connection to the school, police said, and no other students were affected by his actions.
Detectives are working with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office to obtain a search warrant for Kemp’s cell phone. Depending on what they find, Kemp could face more charges.
Police did not release the name of the 13-year-old because of her age and are not disclosing her connection to Kemp to protect her identity. Kemp was being held in the Pinellas County jail on Thursday in lieu of $10,000 bail.
