A 72-year-old man died Saturday morning after his motorcycle was struck by a car that ran a red light in Pinellas County, troopers say.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Lucas Scholing of Safety Harbor was driving his 2007 Honda motorcycle southbound on 49th Street North near St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport. He attempted to turn left onto State Road 688 around 5:30 a.m., police say, when a Volkswagon Jetta, driven by 57-year-old Kathryn Lynne Jackson, ran a red light and struck him in the intersection.

Scholing was taken to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg, where he later died from his injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, troopers said.

Jackson was not injured, troopers said, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
