PALM HARBOR — A 55-year-old New Port Richey woman died on Tuesday after she drove across the median on U.S. 19 and struck an oncoming vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident took place on U.S. 19 north of Alderman Road at about 5:19 p.m.

Melanie Cohen was driving her mid-size Chevy HHR north on northbound U.S. 19 when she lost control of her vehicle, troopers said. The Chevy crossed the median, entered the southbound lanes and struck an Audi Q5 driven by 74-year-old Adrenne Wygonik of Oldsmar.

The Highway Patrol said it was not known why Cohen lost control of her vehicle. She died at the scene of the crash. She was not wearing a seatbelt, trooper said.

Wygonik, who was wearing her seatbelt, was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital in Clearwater with serious injuries.
