INDIAN ROCKS BEACH — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a crash Friday night between a deputy’s cruiser and a motorcycle.

At about 10:40 p.m., Deputy Austin Rill was on duty and driving a marked Chevrolet Tahoe. He was going south on Gulf Boulevard when he turned left onto Fourth Avenue as he tried to stop two cars that had turned onto Fourth Avenue before him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Motorcyclist Charles P. Roberts and his passenger, Vanessa M. Bennett, both 51 and from Indian Rocks Beach, were headed north on a 2007 Harley Davidson that hit the side of Rill’s cruiser.

Roberts and Bennett suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene. She was taken to a hospital and later released, according to the office.

Rill, 23, has been with the department since January 2019.

Impairment and speed were determined not to be factors in the crash.
