Pedestrian, 80, struck and killed while crossing 49th Street N

CLEARWATER — An 80-year-old man was fatally injured Friday when he was struck by a van while walking across 49th Street N near St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash took place at 7:18 p.m. just south of Ulmerton Road. The van was driven by a 69-year-old Clearwater man, troopers said, and was headed north on 49th Street N approaching Ulmerton Road in the outside left turn lane.

The 80-year-old man, who is from Orlando, was walking west across 49th Street N when he was struck, the Highway Patrol said. He was not using the crosswalk when he was hit.

The pedestrian was transported to a hospital where he later died of his injuries, the Highway Patrol said. The van driver was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

The Highway Patrol did not release the name of either man involved in the crash.
