ST. PETERSBURG — A delivery driver was killed Sunday when a load of drywall struck him at a Home Depot store, police said.

St. Petersburg police identified the delivery worker as Cyrenus Leroy Amon, 47, of Interlachen.

St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said Amon was working for the United State Gypsum Co., but a company spokeswoman said Amon worked for a third party that delivered U.S. Gypsum materials. She said she did not know the name of the third party.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and co-workers impacted by this tragic event,” U.S. Gypsum said in a statement.

Amon was fatally injured as he was delivering a load of drywall about 7:30 p.m. in the back of the store at 2300 22nd Ave. N, police said.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating the incident, Fernandez said. Police believe it was likely an accident.

“We’re deeply saddened by this tragic accident, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones,” a Home Depot statement read. “We immediately contacted the proper authorities and are working with them on their investigation.”
