DOVER — While fleeing from deputies, a man shot a dog inside a fenced yard Thursday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they were attempting to pull over a vehicle that might have been stolen near Milagro Court and Blackjack Road . When the deputies turned to follow the car, the driver sped though a stop sign, the sheriff's office said.

The driver and a passenger then fled the car on foot, deputies said. The two ran through several fenced in yards. At one point, they jumped into a yard with several dogs, deputies said.

One of the suspects shot one of the dogs, deputies said. The dog, an American Staffordshire mix named Roscoe, ran under a house. Veterinary staff with Hillsborough Pet Resources is still examining the dog. Deputies, with the aid of K9 units, found the suspects hiding in a nearby swamp.

The names of the suspects or what charges they might face has not yet been released.
