Florida Highway Patrol trooper and jet skier rescue capsized boaters near Sunshine Skyway

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a St. Petersburg personal watercraft rider rescued three boaters Sunday afternoon.

About 4:30 p.m., while checking on the Sunshine Skyway bridge's north rest area, Cpl. Jim Covert observed three boaters atop an overturned boat approximately 200 yards offshore.

After learning there were no rescue vessels in the immediate area, Covert located David Teichman, 26, of St. Petersburg near the rest area with a personal watercraft.

Teichman responded immediately, traveled to the small overturned vessel and safely transported the three boaters to shore.

It was later determined the boaters launched from John's Pass, traveled to the Skyway, and after the boat took on water it was capsized by large waves.

The U.S. Coast Guard, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission also responded to the incident.
