PORT RICHEY — A 42-year-old man suffered a medical episode after being attacked by his own dog on Wednesday, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

John Dunleavy was bitten by his 2-year-old black and white pit bull terrier, Diesel, at about 5 p.m. on the 8600 block of Paxton Drive, deputies said.

At first deputies believed it was the bite wounds that led Dunleavy to suffer what they described as life-threatening injuries. But then deputies said it appears that a preexisting medical condition was actually responsible for his medical condition.

He was taken to a hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Diesel was seized by Pasco County Animal Services. The investigation into the attack is ongoing, deputies said.
