Video shows Polk school bus assistant abusing special needs child(w/video)

Authorities have released video footage showing a Polk County school bus assistant striking a special needs child and violently shaking her head last week.

On Friday, Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies charged Brenda Nelson, 65, with a count of child abuse after a witness reported the incident, which occurred Wednesday about 4 p.m. as the bus was transporting special needs children from Doris Sanders Learning Center in Lakeland.

On Monday, the Sheriff's Office released redacted video that hides the identity of the children, but Nelson can be heard berating the child and approaching her. Nelson has worked for the school district since 1983.

Although the faces of the children are redacted, the child's cries can be heard as Nelson appears to hit her, and then shake her head.
