BRANDON — An 11-month-old girl's parents said their daughter drowned in an apartment complex pond Monday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The infant and her parents were not publicly identified by the Sheriff's Office. The parents were with their daughter when she was pronounced dead at Brandon Regional Hospital, deputies said. The time of death was not disclosed.
The parents drove the girl to the hospital themselves, according to the Sheriff's Office, and told doctors it happened at the Lucerne Apartments complex at 1324 Lake Lucerne Way, near the Westfield Brandon mall.
A 911 caller reported a possible drowning shortly after noon, sheriff's spokesman Danny Alvarez said.
"The parents got the child to the hospital as fast as they could," Alvarez said. "Right now we're trying to figure out just what happened and what brought us to this situation."
The agency released few details about the incident. The medical examiner has yet to determine a cause of death, Alvarez said.
Nearly five hours after being called to Lucerne Apartments the pond and surrounding grounds remained an active crime scene. Non-residents were quickly asked to leave as detectives and crime scene technicians scoured the area and divers searched the pond for evidence.
Alvarez said the investigation will continue late into Monday night.
