Crash involving patrol vehicle, car fire cause backup on Sunshine Skyway

A crash involving a patrol car and a vehicle fire caused traffic to move slowly across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge early Monday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol's live traffic map, the crash involving a patrol car was blocking the inside northbound lane on the Sunshine Skyway shortly after 6:30 a.m.

The driver of the patrol car was hospitalized with injuries, according to broadcast reports.

As of 8:30 a.m., it was taking more than an hour to cross the northern span of the bridge, according to broadcast reports.

The live traffic map indicated that a vehicle fire also occurred on the bridge in the northbound lanes at 6:25 a.m. Troopers indicated smoke was still in the area around 7:30 a.m.
