Driver killed when semi fell on his car on Fowler Avenue identified as a local actor

TAMPA — Authorities have released the name of a man killed last week when a semitrailer truck plunged off an Interstate 75 overpass, landed on his car and burst into flames.

Daniel Lee Allmond, 31, of Spring Hill was driving a Nissan Sentra east on Fowler Avenue on Oct. 2 when the chain-reaction crash happened, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Allmond died at the scene.

Allmond was a fitness consultant and actor who was active with the Carrollwood Players Theatre. The community theater group posted a Facebook tribute that described him as a talented artist and a "kind and loving friend."

"Dan could bring a character to life and light up the stage as soon as he entered," the post said. "He played the villain, the comic relief, the love interest, the joyful nephew and so many other great characters that we will remember for years to come. No role was too small and it was clear that he put heart and soul into every character he played."

Allmond was originally from Inverness, went to Citrus High School and worked as a fitness consultant for First Place Fitness Equipment in Tampa, according to his Facebook page. He recently did contract work for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, appearing in television spots and other marketing materials for an impaired driving campaign called "Drive Baked, Get Busted," a department spokeswoman said.

"Through his work with the department, Daniel made a tremendous impact helping to promote highway safety across the state of Florida, undoubtedly saving lives," a department statement said. "We mourn his tragic loss and our prayers and support will remain with his family and friends during this time of grief."

The incident started when a 2004 Toyota Sequoia sport-utility vehicle driving in the eastbound lanes of E Fowler Avenue entered the cloverleaf entrance ramp to northbound I-75 about 4 p.m. The driver of the Toyota, 40-year-old Jennifer Louise Boynton of Belleview, lost control. The SUV careened across the northbound lanes of the interstate and into the path of the semitrailer truck, the Highway Patrol said.

The two vehicles collided, and the crash sent the semitrailer into the inside barrier wall of the overpass above Fowler. The tractor portion of the truck separated from the trailer and tumbled to the roadway below, with driver Angel Aldana Catalan, 63, of Port St. Lucie, inside.

The truck cab landed on Allmond’s Sentra, then caught fire and burned heavily for 20 minutes, the Highway Patrol said. The trailer eventually fell onto Fowler, too, hitting a Toyota Prius heading west. That driver was not injured.

Catalan, the semi driver, suffered minor injuries.

Boynton, the driver of the Toyota who lost control on the entrance ramp, also had minor injuries, troopers said. Her passenger was not injured.

Troopers do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The incident remained under investigation Thursday.
