A Tampa man is dead and his 3-year-old son is in serious condition after being struck by a hit-and-run driver as they went on a family bike ride Sunday afternoon.
A male suspect is in custody and being interviewed by police but his name has not yet been released by authorities.
"This is a family in a very tough situation," Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said during a Sunday press conference at the scene of the incident. "Their lives changed instantly today."
According to TPD, 42-year-old Pedro Aguerreberry and his 3-year-old and 8-year-old sons Bennett and Lucas Aguerreberry were riding their bicycles on an off-road bike path separated by a grass median on New Tampa Boulevard near Wood Sage Drive shortly before noon when a maroon Dodge Avenger crossed the traffic lane and drove into the family.
"They were doing everything right," Dugan said. "They had bicycle helmets on."
The 8-year-old suffered minor injuries. Both brothers are expected to recover.
TPD located the Avenger in the Pebble Creek area of New Tampa early Sunday evening.
"We cannot have this happening on our streets," Dugan said. "We need to know who drove this car and what happened."
