ST. PETERSBURG

Police find, identify man's body in pond

Police on Friday found and identified a body believed to be the man who went swimming in a pond two nights earlier and never resurfaced.

Officers identified the drowned man as Bret Everett Beebe, a 45-year-old transient. Police say he is likely the man who waded into the water behind Save-A-Lot near 28th Avenue N and 35th Street on Wednesday and disappeared. Authorities searched for several hours Wednesday and all day Thursday. The effort was hampered by low visibility and construction debris within the pond, according to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Lt. Steve Lawrence. In August 2013, a 57-year-old woman died in the same pond, which is also known as Lake Ruby.
